Update 3rd Feb 2012

A.G.M.

Freeze up

2012/13 matches

Firstly a reminder that this Tuesday is the A.G.M. 8pm Chingford

With this weather we have most of our lakes frozen. In view of the problems last year at Paradise I have been breaking the ice each day, unfortunately I will not be around for the next two weeks so if anybody has the time to call in and break some holes around the edge to allow the gases formed by the rotting leaves to escape that would be a good help. Give me a bell and I can tell you what I used

Outings for the coming season are now all booked apart from post Christmas [these four will be booked nearer the time when we have an idea of the weather] Go to the ''Outings'' page and ''Outings Calendar'' in wall chart layout and list format

Update 31st  Jan 2012

Sadly we have to report the death of Jack. Jack had been disabled for some considerable time but still enjoyed his fishing and came out with the lads on matches whenever able.

I am sure the thoughts of all the boys on this weekends match will be with his family

Greetings

Wishing all our members and friends A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND ALL THE BEST FOR THE YEAR AHEAD

Update 4th December

Pike contest

A big thank you to those from our club that turned up at this match, the first one for two years at Forty hall due to ice.

Whilst this was marketed as an individual match there is always friendly rivalry and once again we like to say we "Hollowed out" the opposition.

Following on the success we had at the interclub match earlier this year we again brought home the silverware getting a first and second place.

With a mild night and fairly clear skies it was a very pleasant day hard to believe it was only 3 weeks to Christmas,

we fished for Pike but watched Carp rolling and jumping clear out all day long.

Mike Smith     19lbs  2 fish

Rob Parry         7lbs  1 fish

A big thank you to Ron Sears [Chairman E.A.C.] for spending the day going round making sure everyone was ok and giving out tips and help to those not used to piking.

We are thinking of having an all in match next year anything goes and possibly making it a charity event

Update 31st July

Inter club match Woodlands lake

Well done to the five members that represented Hollow Angling Society today [ 31st ]

The match was fished in five sections, and we can say that the other clubs were "Hollowed out" with us winning four of the five sections and second in the other, a resounding success.

This was the first time we had entered the competition running for the last ten years. Only two of the team had fished the water before whereas all the other competitors were local anglers that had known the water for as much as ten years and fished it regularly.

On the day the fish did not show as was expected and planning our strategy around this by changing our tactics during the day gave us the edge.

I spent an enjoyable day as runner and as  non fishing captain of the team I would like to thank them all for their efforts.

The team was:-

Gary McClair     [ Individual winner 33.5 lbs ]

Graham Baker  [ 2nd overall ],

Steve Usher      [ 3rd overall ],

Dave Smith       [ 4th overall ],

Marc Smith        [  6th overall ]

We have the water booked for the 14th of August for a friendly match open to any Hollow A.S. member.

Phone me to book a place.

To fish this lake on any other day remember you need to book a place with me as per your handbook page 32.

16th November 2010

Paradise

We think we have got over the problem for the moment but looking to the ahead we are going to invest in testing equipment to give us a bit of warning of future problems

3rd  November 2010

Paradise

We have a big problem on the lake. following the overnight heavy frost the trees shed their leaves almost all at once

causing heavy oxygen depletion in the water as they started to rot down. Fish all over the lake were gasping for air.

The E.A. were called in, they came within a few hours to inspect and early the next morning returned to test the water with the result being oxygen level of 14% at best when we should have 80% to 100%  this time of the year.

We [or rather Terry] shot down to the hire shop and got a 2" petrol pump on scene, plus a 1" pump from our store.  Between Terry and myself we kept this going for a week. Whilst we have not solved the problem we saved all but 5 fish.

We spent two days netting leaves by the barrowload, but there are plenty on the bottom still rotting down which will cause the same problem next year.

On the next work party we are going to have to look at clearing sunken leaves, we have a couple of ideas but would like more suggestions.

The committee is now considering the purchase of our own oxygen meter to give us a regular monitoring ability,

If anyone knows of suitable equipment new or second hand please get in touch ASAP.

11th August 2010

Fishers Green

The river is now open

Please will all anglers take extra care of all fish caught, unhooking mats are compulsory,

Barbel are the most affected, you should get them back in ASAP and hold them with their head up stream until they fight to swim away don't just let them go if they wiggle a bit they will swim away and then go belly up.

The river was closed after two Barbel [12 &14 lbs] were found dead, they have been spawning several times this year and they are knackered after their bit of fun

31st  July 2010

Fishers Green

Due to the low water levels and thus low oxygen levels the river is closed for the next few days, until we get some proper rain or lower temps.

The relief channel remains open.

This closure is to protect the Barbel that have only just finished spawning and can not put up with the current conditions and the pressure of being caught

Copy of an E mail from the Head of the Fisheries for the Lea Valley Regional Parks Authority

Hi Mike,

I imagine you are aware of this arrangement where currently HYMB have up to six paddles on the course each calendar year.

Therefore as the protocol system is now working I’ve have been given notice of one of these paddles taking place this Sunday 25th July.

Sometimes if you blink they’ve paddled straight past, so hopefully it may not even be noticed at all. However please can you inform bailiffs and members wherever possible?

Kind Regards

Drayton outing

Due the the dangerous condition of the boards we are on the dam wall this Sunday, we have the whole wall less some broken platforms  but as the water is low it may be best to fish from the steps at the side of the platforms

The water is low which hopefully means most of the fish will be down our end

Fished Passingford for the first time on Saturday [19th]. Was only one there between 5.00am to 10.00am. Caught rudd and 7 pound carp.

Hello Mike,

I fished last evening [23rd], caught everything (bar carp), including some hefty rudd.

I saw another chap land a tench, a father and son doing well on the pole and as I was leaving someone was just a putting a 6 or 7lb Common back in.

It's lovely there now all the foliage is thickened up.

Cheers, Ryan=

23rd June 2010

Royal Small Arms Relief channel

I have just been informed that the channel will be closed during the day until October, it will be open from around 5pm and during the weekend, they are working on the lower sluice/weir and they have lorries up and down causing a problem with rods etc so they will not allow people on site. Lets hope they get their fingers out,

21st June 2010

Royal Small Arms Relief channel

Last week one of our members took advantage of his R.S.A. Relief Channel ticket and was well pleased with this hard venue producing a couple of surprises in a Trout and an Eel.

Passingford

Three members fished on Sunday and had a good day with Crucians and Tench with the odd Carp getting into the picture.

19th June 2010

Royal Small Arms Relief channel

This week the Environment Agency are doing work on the weir [sluice gate] and have lorries going up and down the tow path so for the moment the channel is closed for fishing under health and safety regulations As with all this type of work, timings are fantasy so at present I can not say how long it will be hopefully only a week ! ! !

19th June 2010

Fishers Green

I have just got back from the opening week river fishing in Norfolk and there are a couple of things that have come up whilst I was away.

The bailiffs have reported that despite all the theories about the opening of Fishers to more anglers than before being manic, opening day saw hardly any anglers on the Green. One Barbel and several Chub were seen caught.

Anyone fishing the river late evening check the sunset times before leaving as no times are displayed at the fishery.

Remember you must have your Blue card and your hollow photo card when on the fishery.

The Environment agency are planning to carry out a survey on the fish population in the river on the 28th July.        Fishing will obviously be a no-no on that day [unless you fancy a bolt of electric up your wet carbon fibre rod]                      You are welcome to watch the proceeding on the day but are advised to keep clear of any work.

1st June 2010

Paradise and Passingford

It is now June so both waters are now open to all members

New rivers season

Countdown started 11 for the football and 15 for the start of the river season namely Relief channel at Waltham Abbey and Fishers Green

27th  May 2010

Paradise

The Carp have spawned at Paradise hopefully that is it for this year

May permits

Don't forget only members with a May special permit on both Paradise and Passingford ponds until Tuesday 1st June Bailiffs are checking it will be a ban for ignoring this rule.

24th  May 2010

Fisher Green

The Fishers Green cards and map with more details are now ready and will be going out this week, hopefully you will all have them by the weekend. Read through both the card for rules and the information sheet for details.

The venue will be busy at the start but will sort itself out. Make sure of your timing when on and off the river. No parking at all on the roads.

Any points unclear ring to clarify before you get it wrong on the day.

12th May 2010

We have a few jobs to do at Paradise lake, there is still the tree trunk to get out, a lot of odds and ends left from various work parties , some small branches in the lake to be pulled out, a couple of branches to be cut off from the tree in the car park , and hopefully some reeds to be planted between some of the swims.

Anyone owing a work party give me an E mail ,don't phone as I am away for a week or so but will be on line, I need to know your availability so I can pick the most preferred date be it a week day or weekend.

10th May 2010

From the 16th June we will have nine still waters and three rivers [ four if you include the Cornmill stream] not bad for such a small club and we are solvent with money in the kitty for this years rents etc. and we are still looking for more fisheries.

28th April 2010

Fishers Green

Nearly there now cards printed just got to do write up on parking etc then we will be sending out the cards, they will all be out by the start of June.

30th March 2010

Fishers Green

Had our first meeting last night a formed a working committee along with a formulated based on the Cemex rules and the Turnford Consortium rules that have worked for many years and are accepted by L.V.R.P.A.

It is hoped that we will have cards ready by May, however the complex is still on lease to Cemex until 16th June.

We will send out cards, maps and rules to all members around early June.

Padlock numbers will be printed in the cards as we do with Turnford at present.

29th March 2010

Had our last work party yesterday after the work we took a walk around Fishers Green for the benefit of a few prospective members everyone agreed that it looked very promising a bit of work to do but plenty of swims and many look well used despite recent talk of ''no one fishes it'' . We now have four new members as a result. Membership is growing very fast so it looks like we will be closing the books again this year at some point.

More info on Fishers Green once we have another meeting this week

23rd March 2010

At last we can make it official We have got the FISHERS GREEN COMPLEX

As most anglers will know Cemex refused to pay more for the Fishers green complex and so the Lea valley Park Authority put it out to tender. The committee decided that along with a few other clubs we would form a consortium similar to Turnford to raise the money to make a bid.

On the 19th of March it was officially announced that the newly formed 'Fisher Green consortium' had been successful in their bid.

Unfortunately all this has happened too near to our new season so all the paperwork that has gone out does not show anything about the complex.

We anticipate the the venue will be ours to fish from the !6th June this year as this was the end of the Cemex year on the still water part of the complex the river having closed on the 14th March and not opening until the 16th June.

Along with the other clubs involved we are forming a working committee and rules, dates, membership cards will be sorted. Once it is sorted we will send out tickets to all our members.

We do not see any reason certainly this year to make any form of extra charge for the ticket and with a few extra members that it will attract, it looks like this will stay the same.

We have opened the books this year to more members but as soon as we have enough in the kitty to cover our costs we will again close the books and start a waiting list.

As has been our policy in the past we do not want to make any charge to our members other than the season ticket price

Anyone interested not already in the Hollow Angling Society can find a membership form on the 'membership' page this can be completed and sent in as per the address on the form and membership packs for our existing waters will be dispatched as soon as cheques clear followed by the Fishers Green tickets as soon as the rules are agreed and cards printed ready for the new season 16th June. Please mark the top of the form 'EX CEMEX'

We have a meeting on the 29th when we will start the ball rolling on rules etc.

At this stage we can not say for how long we will keep the membership books open, please give me a ring for any more info or update.

We have a work party at Turnford this Sunday 28th I hope if there are enough there that want to have a look at the Fishers Green complex to take a guided walk around the complex

If there are any existing members or prospective members that know the venue their input would be greatly appreciated on Sunday as would their help at the work party

The work party will be mainly litter picking and a bit of light tree pruning nothing hard this week, anyone with those grabbers used by disabled person or similar for litter picking or long arm loppers/pruners  ''Yes please''

This is the last chance for members old and new to get a MAY permit for Passingford and Paradise remember only work party members with special ticket on the water during May

Numbers at the top for phone calls

Mike

18th March 2010

Quick reminder Work Party at Paradise this Sunday 21st start 8am to around lunch time. Give me a ring if you are coming for me to arrange tools.

Gloves, drink, boots, mac if it is raining any tools you think may be useful.

Next and last  Work Party Turnford Sunday 28th that is the following Sunday

28th February 2010

A big thank you to all those that turned out today at the Passingford work party, I think everyone enjoyed it

23 members around 20% of our adult membership proving we are still the best club in the area for members support.

The weather was not good but not as bad as they predicted the slippery bank was the biggest problem.

With parking correctly we got 9 cars in the parking area and a further 6 on the verges, lets hope everyone parks the same during the year.

Once again thank you all, it was nice to put faces to voices on the phone and meet new members even one on the waiting list

As most people know this fishery fishes at all times of the year, maybe not the the same but still very good, when Geoff and I visited with 4 inches [yes I know they talk in millimetres now but I am to old to change] of snow falling during the visit, but I still had over 60 lbs of fish in about 5 hours.

PASSINGFORD

Despite the heavy rains and the river well into the fields and even across the road nearer Abridge the pond has not filled up. If anybody visits at any time and sees that the drainage pond is clear from rain water or very muddy from the run off from the fields please give me a ring as we can then use this water to fill our pond at present it is to contaminated from the farm usage.

PASSINGFORD

The lilies are dying back now the big yellow kingcup variety has completely gone the others are always the last to go needing a frost to really die but at least they have stopped growing. Since the removal of lots of the Rudd the remainder have put on weight unfortunately many more have bred we will continually monitor their growth.

The Crucians have continued to grow and give good sport. This season the Tench have shown up better and if things go on improving next year should be good like it was a few years ago. The Carp seem to have wised up a bit and have not been so easy to catch this year, still plenty shown but more thought needed.

Work party here February 28th 2010 book early to ensure a place , places are limited this year.

PARADISE

Still it seems that it is only the Carp that anglers are interested in here. The top weight so far is 25lbs taken in September.

There has been a problem with the ducks and the pair of geese this season, this is because of the freebie floaters put out by anglers, the ducks say thank you for this we will bring a few relatives to join in the easy feast. The committee will be looking at groundbaiting in general for next year at Passingford and Paradise.

Work party here March 21st  2010 book early to ensure a place , places are limited this year.

TURNFORD

BOOT PIT

A few large 25/30lb Carp have been banked in the last two months along with some Tench to 9lbs, but it is still very underfished. From now Pike will be the main target.

RAILWAY PIT

This pit is fished heavily during the summer but is now often occupied by only a few anglers. Carp to 39.5lbs banked this month. Bream to 10lbs are showing all the time to the Carp anglers along with Tench to 9lbs.

LEA PIT

Bream to double figures feature all the time from the swims round the back when fished after dark. Rudd showing all day.

MARSH PIT

This time of the year along with Boot pit it is the venue for the Pike anglers

The Work Party for Turnford will be 28th March 2010 book now for a place, more info later.

Subjects outside of their remit will be discussed and if appropriate will form the basis for a motion to be presented at the A.G.M.

Two subjects that are automatically reviewed each year are Subscriptions and Membership levels. We currently have a waiting list as the membership level set by the Committee was reached.

Any member having any subject or topic for the Committee to discuss or rule on for the coming season 2010/11     should Email or phone the Secretary by midday Tuesday 3rd November secretary@hollowanglingsociety.co.uk  02085053215 --07989817316

PASSINGFORD POND

The fishing at Passingford has been really good from most of the reports this season. We have had Carp to 17 lbs Crucians to at least 2.5lbs, I believe some of the reports of 4lbs may have been Crucian Carp crosses as 4lb Crucian is top of the class stuff. The Tench that for the last two or three seasons have been rather small and thin have found some more food and have been caught to five pounds and looking fairly plump. This may be as a result of the more modern type of protein rich bait used in the recent seasons. The removal of many of the smaller Rudd has had a good effect on the remainder with fish up to 1.5 lbs being taken.

PARADISE POND

Still waiting for more offers of help so as it is now too near the deadline I am afraid it is off

Any suggestions! ! ! ! ! !

9th September 2009

PARADISE POND

Up until tonight I have had only two offers of help and unfortunately they could not do the same day.

As a result we will only be clearing some of the debris the soil level will have to stay as it.

MEMBERSHIP

Membership is now closed for the season as we have reached our agreed level, and we have started a waiting list

Next season application forms can be downloaded from this site on the "Membership" page or obtained from the Secretary. These will be taken in from the beginning of March. The new tickets will then be sent out in time for the new season. Before sending in old ticket write your Hollow membership number on the back of your Turnford ticket and keep this for proof of membership on our waters until the end of March, alternatively you can provide two new photograhs.

At the end of April anyone not taking up their entitlement of membership will be deemed not joining and their places will be offered to those on the waiting list

Not too late to offer to help at Paradise on either 16th, 17th or 18th September and don't forget it will qualify for a May 2010 fishing permit at Paradise and Passingford

We have banned two anglers this last month. One was off of his rods and had a six months ban the other was using three rods and received a six month ban.

PARADISE POND

Before I get anymore phone calls we have removed the tree that fell into the water thanks to Terry and Paul Stevens for their help.

The platform at swim 4 has been removed due to rot, it is hoped to replace it on a work party with a swim like no 1 a bit safer and more pleasing to the eye.

STILL WAITING FOR HELP, SEE 15 AUGUST BELOW

15th August 2009

Paradise POND

HELP WANTED

With the dry weather [yes it really has been dry as far as ponds are concerned] the water level is well down and it is now dry behind the small island. It has been decided that this will be a good opportunity to rake and dig out the bottom so that there will always be water behind the island giving fry an area to escape from the Perch. The nature of the area to the rear also means that a lot of natural food like bloodworm etc inhabits the area and it unfortunately dies when the water level drops and it dries out.

We want to do this the week commencing the 14th Sept.

Now comes the good bit, up until now it has been the 'royal we' doing the work, this will have to change.

I have had lots of offers of help midweek or maybe Saturdays, unfortunately so far this year the two midweek work parties have been me and myself despite the offers.

So in order to do this work I must have help. Ring me and let me know what day is best that week and hopefully we can agree a day/date.

27th July 2009

We have reached our agreed membership level set to ensure that our waters especially Passingford and Paradise do not get overfished or banks ruined.

We have therefore started a waiting list and if during this season we have any members move out of the area or cease fishing for any reason we will take names from the list,

Next season we will offer membership to existing members first and then take names from any list. The time allowed for members to renew will be set at the November committee meeting when subs etc for the next season are agreed, any thoughts you [members] have on the matter please forward to me secretary@hollowanglingsociety.co.uk

Next year we will be operating the work party participants only allowed to fish at Passingford and Paradise during May 2010. Bailiffs and other members will be checking for May tickets at both venues. You must book which work party you will attend as we can not have everyone at one venue and blank on others. The dates are:-

28th February    2010     Passingford

21st March       2010     Paradise

28th March       2010     Turnford

No reminders will be sent out so watch the web for any updates and the notices at the fisheries.

We have left two Sundays 7th & 14th March clear in case of problems and for those of you that like to get out on the rivers in the last two weeks of the river season. As I have been told that Sundays are out for some people I will arrange one midweek work party later in the season that members can book for, however failing to turn up on that day having already been issued a May ticket will result in the committee being asked to cancel membership.

I have had several phone calls about the ducks at Paradise. The problems has escalated this season due to the surface fishing that has become popular this season and the anglers thinking that they have to bombard the water with freebies, these often do not get eaten and drift to the edge the ducks that have in previous years spent their life mainly on the small pond eating natural vegetation have decided 'why work at getting food when anglers feed them'. The answer is the same as Railway pit 'cut out the freebies, groundbait etc' the ducks will go and the fish will be hungry and go looking for food which will now be your hook bait. The committee will be reviewing the situation at each meeting. At Railway the Coots are the main problem diving on the boiles and seed baits that anglers seem to spend all their time spodding and firing out. These like several other ducks can dive at least 10 foot down

Remember No nuts, particles or boilies at either Passingford or Paradise, and groundbait only in feeders. Bailiffs will check

Please everyone reread your Handbook, and sign.

WORK PARTIES

PASSINGFORD

Despite the lack of help on two work parties 20th May and 1st July [advertised on the gate] the lillies have been controlled better than last year.

Depending on the rain fall I hope that we may be able with help [!] clear around the back of the small island at Paradise, as of last week before I went away there was still no water there making it possible . Last year as I was aiming to clear it the heavens opened for a couple of days and filled the pond up. If all goes well I will post a date on this site and on the gate.

Earlier this summer I spent a couple of hours at Passingford in a boat trying to save a carp swimming around towing a bubble float. Unfortunately I could not catch it as it dived every time I got close, subsequently I retrieved the float in the lillies with the remains of a Carp of around fifteen pounds. The society rules are no fixed feeders this applies to things like floats, if fixed with rubbers the fish can pull free of any float and with the line then slack usually eject the barbless hook, this float had a line fixed from hook to the ring of the bubble and then the reel line tied to the other ring on the bubble. The fish had no chance as the line was under tension the whole time and the poor thing kept swimming trying to pull against the pull of the float.

All rigs must be made up in such a way that wherever a line breaks the fish will only have a hook and a length of line, any floats attached by rubbers will pull off as they catch in the lillies and the fish pulls. Apart from the sight of a poor fish towing the float for over three weeks and dying a slow death unable to eat, we can not afford to lose fish.                         If in any doubt as to what is safe please feel free to ring me.

Parking is tight but if you park as per the handbook [page 19] there is not a problem

PARADISE POND

Earlier this month Terry and I spent several hours trimming back trees on the island and removing loads of rigs and line in the trees. Please be more careful it is only a short cast and I would like to think most of our members are good enough at casting underhand so as to keep tackle going out more at water level rather than descending in an arc from the skies from an overhead cast and connecting with trees before the water.

Still at Paradise we are finding rubbish left. I know that this is sometimes from kids sneaking in over the fence but not always. ANYONE leaving rubbish in their swim will be banned -NO EXCEPTIONS OR WARNINGS- it will cost us the loss of the fishery

Remember whilst we have bailiffs they can not be there 24/7, all members are authorised, and expected, on showing their membership to ask to see that of anyone on the fishery. Anyone without a photo card membership should be asked to leave, phone me or Terry if you have a problem and have a mobile with you. Remember you have paid to fish so why should anyone be allowed to poach.

Several people have been reported going through the gate before the padlocked one into the paddock behind the house and cutting back near the stock pond, THIS PADDOCK IS OUT OF BOUNDS even if the gate is open. Lastly park according to the instructions in the handbook[ page 24]

14th May 2009

A work party is planned for 20th May [Wednesday]

The aim is to control the lillies. To do this I will need help so if you are able to help give me a ring 020 85053215 or 07989817316 if I do not have enough help nothing will be done, which is what happened last year and the lillies took over by August.

All you will need is a landing net to collect cut plants, we have a cutter that can be used from the bank.

If you have chest waders and can get into the water this will be a great help. It is between 2'6" to 4' deep on the front bank and around 3' in the far right corner. I have in younger days walked over the whole of the pond.

Phone for more info

I await the phone calls

1st April  2009

We have banned two members from all Hollow Angling Society fisheries

Mr D Motram - No.109 and Mr Sword - No.110

In March they were found with unattended rods and parking in the lane at Turnford.  Their cheque for 2009/10 bounced and despite stating they would deliver the cash they changed their mind.

If they are found on our waters please tell them to leave and try and telephone myself or Terry Barton, and if free we will try and attend. numbers in Handbook page 1.

29th March 2009

The last work party was carried out today at Turnford. Thank you to      those that attended. Everyone pulled their weight and a lot of work was achieved.

We now have a weekend free before the start of the outings for those interested, see the outings venue page.

Everyone that attended a work party received their 'green May ticket' if I missed anyone let me know.

Bailiffs will be checking on members during May at both Passi and Paradise.

Those of you that are interested in trying the Relief channel send me a S.A.E. for a ticket as soon as you know.  I will send them out as soon as I get them [usually around first week June] on a first come first serve basis.

15th March 2009

It is now nearly the end of the Society year and all memberships expire 31st of this month.

A new application form should arrive soon or get in early and pick one up from our web site. All subs stay the same despite the hard times

We reached our ideal membership level this season and in view of this we will hold taking in new members until April to give existing members time to renew.

We had a successful work party at Passingford with a good turn out and all the planned work completed. The car park is now flattened out for its whole length [thanks Glen] and as a result we had nine cars parked within the car parking area, eight end on, please  park end on to save the calls I get saying the car park full with only three or four cars. The path from swim four [now 'Reed Walk' ] was extended and the wet wood burnt thanks to the scouting Reed family.

Some tools were found after everyone left please give me a bell to pick them up.

Green May fishing permits were issued to all those there.

The second work party [ Paradise ] was a disaster only six present [four OAP's, one concession and one adult,] and of these four members had been at Passingford. We had lots of equipment ready just no bodies so alas not much was done. The two bridges were rebuilt and some of the prunings amassed over the last few months were burnt up. We still need to rebuild the platforms and work on several swims along with more tidying up including work on trees over the water.

The next and last work party to get a Green May permit is on the 29th at Turnford. I Must have a phone call before then if you want to attend,

[ 07989817316 ] If I get too many for Turnford we may hold one at Paradise on that day but that depends on phone calls.

Remember work party workers only on Passi and Paradise in May so get on that phone.

Our outings officer Colin has booked us some really exciting venues for this coming season, see the magazine Bankside 26,  Feb 2009.

Website will be updated with news on venues asap.

Along with the increased value and number of prizes it should be a good season. The rules are all listed in the handbook, if you feel like giving it a go give Colin a bell he will explain where we meet and times, there is nothing complicated, all common sense really.

Here's wishing you all a good season ahead, and remember get those applications in now to avoid disappointment.

SPECIAL FISH

We have for some time been wanting to find out how the fish in our waters are doing, for a start we want to monitor specific fish. I caught a beautiful fish that will be unmistakable in the future.

Anyone catching this fish in the future is asked to weigh it, measure it [ use your landing net or mark up your unhooking mat with a spirit marker before you next go out] photo it if possible then contact me either by phone or on secretary@hollowanglingsociety.co.uk

Whatever happens look after it as it is both a most beautiful fish and important to us to find out if we need to do anything to the lake.

As we get  more truly distinctive fish recorded we will extend the monitoring

PASSINGFORD

Week commencing 28th April [ Tues, Thurs or Fri]I am going to try and give the lilies a bit of a headache I will need the help of just three members. I hope to pull a heavy chain backwards and forwards acting as a cheese wire effect. This will be fairly heavy work so is only on if I get three replies from able bodied members. May ticket for those three.

I will do no more unless I get three phone calls.

8th April 2008

HAINAULT LAKE

I have just had some bad news, the London Borough of Redbridge have decided to take Hainault lake back in house. This means that we will no longer have it as one of our waters. At this stage I do not know if they will be making a charge for fishing or if in fact there will be fishing allowed there.

The lake was not a drain on our resources as we took day ticket money to offset the rent, this means that the loss will not affect our budget forecast or subscription rates.

The Pages for Hainault lake should therefore be crossed out of the Handbook.

If there are any members that have joined just for Hainault the Society will obviously return subscriptions. Return the Hollow angling society membership photo card, along with the Handbook and the Turnford card, on receipt of these we will issue a refund.

We are sad about this loss as it is an old water in our portfolio but the matter was not even up for discussion, just a brief E mail to me saying the decision had been made, end of.

6th April 2008

Well it is now 4pm and I have just finished putting away all the tools after cleaning and drying them off after our final work party at Paradise.

This morning my neighbour saw me leaving at 6.30am as he was taking his dog out and asked me to bequeath him my mower that he keeps borrowing as he felt sure I would never return except in a box.

      I felt the same.

However once there it got better [ I lie, it got bloody awful first then got better ] The snow stopped except when Colin shook the tree and covered everyone under it. We did not see the sun but kept on the move and apart from the odd cold hand [ I say it was because they were idle hands ] we did not suffer any fatalities

A lot of work was done on trees that had caused a problem casting and playing fish last year. Two swims were dug out boarded up and levelled off to make safer. As usual Captain Ray Methvan and first mate Mick Pryce took the boat and attended to the trees and undergrowth on the main island  and the fallen tree by swim 7. Despite the snow in the boat neither managed to slip over or fall in,

[ maybe it was because I had the camera ready and waiting ] Garry Methvan did suggest running a book on who was going in first his Dad or Mick, nice lad still his Mum loves him.

We did not manage all that we hoped as the turnout was not as good as Passingford so some will have to wait until next year unless I get a bit of spare time or the fairies do their magic.

I don't think I missed out the 'orange may ticket' for anyone that has turned out on the three work parties, if I have mail me back.

In all today ten men, three juniors and again one lady member turned out. A big thank you all round I hope you all enjoyed it as much as me, if not just think how good it will be next time with good weather.

Finally note that the outing next Sunday has been changed due to the conditions from Paradise to Hatfield Pevril Top [ micks] lake on the A12

4th April 2008

This Sunday 6th April we have the Paradise work party the last one before May when the waters at Passingford and Paradise will only be open to those having worked on a work party.

Weather man says it will be cooler but that is better for working.

The start will be as usual 8am finish around noon or so.

The following Sunday the 13th Paradise lake will be closed as we have the first outing of the season on the lake, see outings venue page for info.

                              Outing Venue page

The weather is breaking now despite the coming cold few days so I hope more of you will be getting out when you do please start sending in information and comments on our waters and any other waters that you visit.

We also like any stories that you have.

Good fishing

Mike Smith

29th March 2008

Today we had a netting at Passingford. It went very well we started at 7am and were finished two sweeps by 10am.

The netting came about after many members complained about the small Rudd that made it hard to catch anything else. It was decided at the November committee and general meeting to thin down the stocks in the same way that we thinned down the Crucians some six years ago, allowing the remainder to grow.

The necessary permits were obtained from the Environment Agency and a team booked in via the E.A. for the first available day which turned out to be Saturday 29th

The first sweep was amazing compared with those we had done before. There were all species Carp to 14 lbs, Crucians 3.5 lbs, Perch to around 2.5 lbs Tench 3 lbs Roach around 1 lb and Rudd around 1.5 lbs. The previous nettings hardly any carp were caught as they worked their way around and under the nets. About 30 carp were in the net and about 20 good Crucians, unfortunately only a couple of Tench. Absolutely loads of 8 oz plus Rudd and Roach. There were a good size range of all fish showing that the fish have been breeding year on year.

Seeing what was in the net it was decided to draw the line at 5 inch, so all the Rudd and Roach under 5 inch were removed, the sizes ranged from an inch to 5 inches.

All the other fish were returned.

Apart from one Carp around 7 lbs that had bad tail damage and a few smaller Rudd that had a bit of mouth damage all the fish were in excellent condition.

A second sweep was carried out and unbelievably even more fish were netted and the same criteria was used of fish up to 5 inches removed all others returned.

We will review the situation as the season progresses but we may have to do this on a regular basis to keep the stock controlled if they keep breeding the same.

The effect during the summer will be a better chance of connecting good size fish and if we have a hot dry summer the oxygen requirements will be less.

The clocks go on tonight and we are up early tomorrow for the Turnford work party so it is an early night for me.

Nite nite all.

Mike Smith

10th  March 2008

Well the first work party of the season is over and on behalf of all those that fish the water a big well done on all fronts. We had the best turnout ever, many new faces and I believe everyone enjoyed it.

We got just about every job done and even managed to get all the prunings burnt thanks to our fire master Roy Oliver. Unfortunately the proposed removal of reeds and lillies to another fishery fell through right at the end leaving a pile of weeds by the gate, they will hopefully rot down and dry out over the next few weeks and then anyone that fancies a bonfire can burn them on the site of our fire today by swim eleven.

As usual with the aid of his ladder and strong saw the overhead trees were well pruned by Mike Pryce with Ray and Gary Methvan.

Every swim received attention in several cases the whole swim was ripped up and re-laid better.

The path on the road side was cleared and now boasts a set of steps complete with handrail [anyone got a second hand Stenna stair lift].

Colin our outing secretary spent the day up to his nipples in the water clearing trees bushes and every swim of reeds.

Roy turned up with the whole family including the ladies and was not shy in getting them into some of the mucky areas, shame on you Roy , Wendy make sure he makes up for it, but well done.

Fred one of our bailiffs and first on site spent a lot of time clearing smelly reeds, bushes, brambles and in the smoke of the bonfire all the time.

Special thanks to the two juniors Scott and Charlie who did not stop all the time often getting the worst job from their work partner

Infact everyone worked really well just can not mention everyone.

I came home cleaned and unpacked all the gear reloaded the motor for a weeks holiday fishing, had a shower and on coming downstairs realised how the whole house stank of smoke from my overalls and even my paperwork forcing me to stop and put the overalls in the washing machine, so taking the time waiting to type this page.

The next work party is on 30th March at Turnford, we only need a few volunteers that day start 8am finish 12. Ring me if you are coming.

The next after that it will be Paradise on 6th April same start as this time 8am but we should with a good turn out be finished earlier

For Paradise the same tools as Passingford will be good plus any timber that you may have laying around and if anyone has scaffold clips we will need them for the two platform swims that need attention.

Once again thank you all.

Mike Smith
